Growing a Garden is Great Fun for Grown Ups!
Have you always wanted to grow your very own garden but weren’t sure how to make it happen? Have you ever bought a flower, taken it home and thought to yourself “I should grow these myself”? How often do you think “I bet if I grew my own fruits and veggies they would taste better and I’d save some money” when you are standing in the produce section at the grocery store? How often do you think about saving some money by growing your own herbs? How often do you look at your current living space and wonder where your garden should go? Here is some good news: gardens can be grown pretty much everywhere, even indoors. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Try not to let your seedlings dry out all the way. It is true that there are plants that grow best in drier soil but that does not mean that they can grow with no water. Every single seedling you grow is going to need to be watered. Obviously you don’t need to try to grow your seedlings in mud but they do need at least a little bit of water now and then. The amount of water you will need to give to your plants will depend on the types of plants that you are trying to grow. Learn how much water your seedlings will need and how often they will need it before you put them into your garden. You want your garden to live and it won’t be able to if you drown it or let it dry out!
If you want to baby your plants, you can get a head start by sprouting them inside in seeding pots a few weeks or months before planting them. It is easier to control the temperature inside your house, which gives you a better chance at growing plants that are sensitive or “high maintenance”. Some plants will grow by your just tossing a seed into some dirt. Lettuce is one of these plants. For some plants, more precise methods of care and nurturing are needed for the plant to grow.
Don’t purchase every tool in the garden shop just because they’re hanging there. Start with a few things you know you’ll need (spades, rakes and hoses) and then build your collection slowly from there. As you work out in your gardens you will start to learn which tools are important to always have on hand and which you only use once in a while. Resist the urge to buy all of the tools being upsold to you by the gardening clerk at the store. It’s possible that you’ll spend too much money on things that you won’t ever use.
Planting a garden of your own is fun! There is no shame in enjoying working in the dirt and getting soil all over yourself.
Gardening probalby makes you feel like you’re a child again. This is perhaps the top reason that so many people become so dedicated to gardening. They enjoy the work that goes into growing plants!
