Do people play too many computer games?

When it comes to online games then the reigning champion has to be World of Warcraft. I doubt in 2004 when Blizzard launched the first installment that they could have guessed how popular it was going to be, it quickly grew in popularity to the point where now they have over 10 million subscribers. Most of the subscribers play responsibly and will go on every so often to put in a few hours and advance a level in the game, but there are now a lot of people who have become addicted to it and play for as many hours of the day as they can.

So why is it so addictive? Above all else I think the one thing that gets people coming back for more is the ability to level. The missions/quests that you have to do are not even that important, although obviously it does help if they are interesting and varied, but the most important thing is that at the end of it you will get experience points and/or new items for your trouble. The level cap on the game used to be 80, but they have just released an expansion which has raised it to 85, so everyone is rushing to get all their characters up to the new cap as quickly as possible.

For people who struggle with the game then guides like the one mentioned in this Zygor Guide review have started to emerge which tell you which quests you should complete to progress as fast as possible to level 85. Following one of these guides will help you to cut out a lot of the wasted effort that is inevitable in a game the size of World of Warcraft, however it will also be less fun to just follow instructions rather than make your own way in the game.
